It takes a lot of careful coordination to work as a framing team — especially when you are just learning to read blueprints and use your tools for the first time. And especially when you are building such a unique structure as The Wedge. We had to carefully measure to make sure we accounted for […]
We kicked off this Fall Semester with The Wedge by insulating the floor and adding the plywood subfloor. We are using 3 1/2″ thick R-Max Thermashield rigid foam insulation for the floor, packed tightly between the 2×4 floor joists. The whole floor assembly is covered with 3/4″ plywood. We have lots of new students on […]
Now that we have the floor completed, we were ready to stand up the two walls that were previously framed. It took the entire class to lift the walls into place!! After making sure they were square and completely plumb, we added many rows of diagonal bracing to keep them in place. It’s great to […]
Now that we have selected our featured windows for the front face of The Wedge, the class was excited to learn how to frame our distinct wedge-shaped wall. We are doing things a little out of sequence because we have not finished insulating the floor or installing the subfloor, but we really wanted to see […]
After adding a plastic membrane over the metal flashing, we started framing the three floor sections.
Before we could start framing the floor, we needed to prepare the trailer to provide protection from moisture, pests and road hazards. This was accomplished by installing sheet metal flashing. The flashing was applied directly to the metal frame of the trailer with adhesive caulking.
We took a field trip to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore to check out their supply of gently used windows, doors and other construction materials. We found more hidden treasures next door at The Reuse People, including some reclaimed windows we selected for the front face of The Wedge.
Today’s the day! Our trailer arrived in style this morning. Grab your tools — it’s time to start building!!
Like wrapping a present — OK, a very big and awkwardly-shaped present! — we wrapped The Wedge in a layer of moisture-protection building paper. The product we selected is Dupont’s “Tyvek DrainWrap” because combines superior air and water resistance, vapor permeability and strength of Tyvek with a vertically grooved surface, to help channel water safely […]
Our goal has been to provide the best insulation for The Wedge, in order to minimize heat loss and summer heat gain. With proper insulation, we will be able to maintain comfortable temperatures inside the house without the need for supplemental heating and cooling systems. Our insulating system includes wrapping the house in a 1″ […]
